We asked some of the photographers and educators who are speaking at WPPI 2019 to tell us about their experiences attending WPPI, the largest wedding and portrait photography conference and show in the U.S. Here’s what Jerry Ghionis had to say.

What was your first year attending WPPI?
The first time I attended WPPI was in 2004.

What is your fondest WPPI memory?
One of my fondest memories would definitely be being asked to present my first Platform program. I seriously expected to have no one in the audience and I was floored when I had a full house. Then just a few years ago, I was able to present to several thousand people at the Grand Garden Arena for my Platform class, after having just seen Bon Jovi perform there a few days before. Another great memory is winning my very first Grand award for the print competition. One of my biggest highlights, though, was receiving my Grand Master award and having it presented to me by my wife.

What are you excited to see in 2019?
I’m really excited to be going back to the Mandalay Bay again. It’s such a great venue. Last year, it felt like a “new house” in that everyone was trying to get used to where everything is and where to go. I’m sure this year, it’s going to feel like we’re going back home. I also can’t wait to share my brand-new presentation on Wednesday morning. I can’t reveal any details ahead of time, but it’s going to feature a very special surprise. And I’m looking forward to hosting the Master Challenge again this year—that is going to happen on Wednesday afternoon.

Why do you come year after year?
I have been involved with WPPI in so many different ways and in different roles over the years, but ultimately, the reason I come back year after year is for the networking and the many friendships I have made, just to soak in the great energy

How has attending WPPI helped you propel your business?
Learning and rubbing shoulders and talking to more experienced photographers always makes you better. A small casual conversation at a bar can end up being just as life-changing as listening to a big Platform program.
