Letter From The Editor: A Time to Reflect and Recharge

I’m what you might call old school—I prefer reading something I can hold in my hands as opposed to on my phone or laptop. I prefer my old film cameras to digital ones. And, I still miss the days of heading over to a Blockbuster video store and renting some DVDs for the weekend. As I wax nostalgic, it also makes me reflect on the changes Rangefinder has experienced in the last three years as it continues to evolve.

letter from the editor

Rangefinder was in its 70th year as a print magazine when we went digital in Jan. 2020. Traditional me was sad but “roll with the punches” me was excited to embark on a new journey with the Rangefinder and WPPI teams. Rangefinder may have changed in format but not in mission and vision—to build community and connect the wedding and portrait photography industry, help photographers grow their businesses and sustain them over time, and provide helpful tools and resources to help them create.

When we talk about community, we also have to talk about WPPI, the show brand that Rangefinder is a part of. Three years ago, shows and conferences quickly came to a halt due to the pandemic, but WPPI had a show in Feb 2020, right before the world turned upside down, then another show in August of 2021, and the most recent one was this past February. Now we are excited and ramping up for WPPI 2023 taking place in Las Vegas March 5-9. It’s all been about persevering, staying positive and adapting to change which, I feel, are all good messages to wrap up another chaotic year with.

Many of us are still working remotely and crave that once a year in-person educational and networking experience that WPPI provides, as well as a 360-a-year presence from both brands online. We thank you for reading Rangefinder, for supporting our vision, for attending WPPI and for being part of our community. We love feedback so please reach out on what we are doing right, what we can improve upon and what you want to see covered by us in the coming months. Have a very happy holiday, stay safe and stay healthy.
