In celebration of the art of portrait photography, the Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art in St. Joseph, Missouri, presents “Portraits Americana: A Brief Survey of American Portrait Photography,” opening this month through January 6, 2019.
Guest curator Glenn Rand has chosen works that will show how American artists used, and are still using, the photographic portrait to bring a greater understanding of the subjects, settings, personalities and the artists’ vision.
“This exhibit provides insights into the way these artists used various tools and approaches to reach the essence of their subjects,” Rand explains. “The common point is that they were all produced in a way that will connect with and affect the viewers.”
The show features more than 40 American photographers from the turn of the 20th century up to present day, including Edward Weston, Alfred Stieglitz, Gertrude Käsebier, James Van Der Zee, Edward Steichen, Gordon Parks, Ansel Adams, Arnold Newman, Phillip Stewart Charis, Nick Vedros, Matika Wilbur, Judy Host and more.
The Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art will open “Portraits Americana: A Brief Survey of American Portrait Photography” on Friday, November 16 from 4 to 7 p.m. For more information, visit the museum’s website.
