Tamron’s 35-150mm F/2-2.8 Di III VXD Full-Frame E-Mount
October 2, 2021
Tamron’s first full-frame E-mount zoom with a maximum f/2 aperture—the 35-150mm f/2-2.8 Di III VXD—is set to launch on October 28 for under $2K, at $1,899. While a 24-70mm f/2.8 is a common workhorse lens, Tamron’s 35-150mm f/2-2.8 Di III VXD E-Mount covers a longer focal length and offers a brighter aperture on the long end. Tamron has also announced that its new 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD will launch on the same day for $899 and the Fujifilm X-Mount 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 III-A VC VXD for $699. All three lenses were previously announced, but Tamron’s September 29 announcement brings full details on the new optics.

The Tamron 35-150mm f/2-2.8 Di III VXD is designed for travel. Sony says the E-mount lens allows photographers to capture wide views at 35mm and close details at 150mm. The lens encompasses several popular focal lengths. At the widest angle, the f/2 delivers a slightly wider aperture than the more common f/2.8 zoom. The lens uses a Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive linear autofocus motor (According to the manufacturer, this design creates faster, more precise autofocus).

Those optics are wrapped up in a moisture-resistant design but the lens is also customizable. Using the new Tamron Lens Utility, photographers can plug the lens into a computer. With the software, photographers can customize the custom switch setting or change the rotation direction of the focus ring, among other options.
Putting the wider aperture and longer focal lengths together creates a heavier lens—the 35-150mm lens weighs about 2.5 pounds.

Tamron’s second generation 28-75mm f2.8 for E-Mount will come in at a lower price point than the 35-150mm at $899. The Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 keeps the smaller size of the original but revamps the optics for enhanced resolution with the increasing megapixel counts of today’s camera bodies. The lens uses a Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive and also has customization options with the Tamron Lens Utility software.

Finally, Tamron’s trio of announcement brings more details about the 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 Di III-A VC VXD for the Fujifilm X-Mount. Fujifilm shooters previously had largely manual focus lenses available for third-party optics before Tamron announced the development of Fujifilm X mount lenses. The 18-300mm brings a versatile 16.6x zoom, equivalent to 27mm to 450mm. It uses a VXD linear autofocus motor and focuses close enough for a 1:2 reproduction ratio. Despite the zoom range, it weighs less than 1.5 pounds. It’s also slated to release day on October 28 (for $699).
Note: Tamron says that the current global health crisis could impact the release date or supply of the new lenses.
