Tamron says its new 70-300mm Di_III_RXD telephoto zoom is the world’s "smallest and lightest lens for Sony E-mount full-frame mirrorless cameras.”

Tamron has just announced the launch of its 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3 Di III RXD lens, being touted by the company as “the world’s smallest and lightest telephoto zoom lens for Sony E-mount full-frame mirrorless cameras.”

While Tamron has manufactured many popular telephoto zoom lenses that extend to 300mm for DSLR cameras, the newly released 70-300mm F4.5-6.3 is the first model designed for full-frame mirrorless cameras.

The new lens, measuring 5.8 inches long and weighing just 19.2 ounces—with a fixed aperture of F6.3 at the telephoto end and max diameter of 77mm—comes without sacrificing image quality. It also packs in an array of useful features, including full weather sealing and an extra-silent RXD autofocus motor technology that can take full advantage of Sony’s much lauded hybrid autofocus system.

According to Tamron’s announcement, “all photographers, from first-time users of dedicated telephoto zoom lenses to experienced enthusiasts seeking a compact, lightweight telephoto zoom, can comfortably enjoy the advantages of a powerful, versatile zoom without worry about size or weight.”

Optically, the lens is constructed of 15 elements in 10 groups, including a low dispersion element for minimizing aberrations. The lens is also compatible with many of the advanced features that are specific to certain mirrorless cameras, including:

  • Fast Hybrid AF
  • Eye AF
  • Direct Manual Focus (DMF)
  • In-camera lens correction (shading, chromatic aberration, distortion)
  • Camera-based lens unit firmware updates

For landscapes, sports, birds, and wildlife, as well as closer subjects such as portraits and street scenes, Tamron says that this lens greatly expands the range of telephoto photography in those types of shots.

The Tamron 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3 Di III RXD is scheduled to begin shipping on October 29th and will cost $550. The company does warn prospective buyers, however, that “the release date or product supply schedule can change…due to the current global health crisis.” To lean more about the new lens, visit the Tamron website.
