This trio of new Sony E-mount G lenses—the FE 24mm f/2.8 G, FE 40mm f/2.5 G and FE 50mm f/2.5 G—each measure a Lilliputian 1.77 inches long with a 2.68-inch diameter and are extremely lightweight.

About a week after announcing its 60th E-mount lens (the FE 50mm f/1.2 G Master was announced on March 16), Sony surprised everyone with its
E-mount G-lens trio of compact primes (this lens set is not to be confused with the flagship G Master series). The FE 24mm f/2.8 G, FE 40mm f/2.5 G and FE 50mm f/2.5 G add long-awaited ultra-compact options for Sony mirrorless cameras.

All three new interchangeable Sony E-mount G lenses measure a lilliputian 1.77 inches long with a 2.68-inch diameter, and they are extremely lightweight: FE 50mm and FE 40mm weigh 6.1 ounces while the FE 24mm is a little lighter at 5.7 ounces. These featherweight lenses add almost nothing to a kit or camera bag, which is always a plus. When you’re loaded down with a telephoto lens on one camera, having a small, wider-angle lens on a second camera gives you the flexibility of shooting the various scenes you’re faced with without loading you down with extra weight.

Given the similar size and weight of all three, exchanging one for another won’t require rebalancing a gimbal in the middle of a shoot—a huge benefit for videographers. Additionally, a clear marking on each lens helps prevent picking up the wrong focal length during a lens exchange. Additionally, all three utilize the same size (49mm) filters and are dust and moisture resistant.

A couple of notable features that add value to these lenses include a customizable focus hold button and an aperture ring with a click switch to accurately adjust exposure. When shooting video, the click switch can be disabled for smooth, quiet operation.

We expect sharp images as well as beautifully soft bokeh from these lenses, and Sony also promises efficient and accurate focusing. The trio of lenses utilizes dual linear motors for speedy, responsive and quiet autofocus. Thanks to the lenses’ Linear Response MF, manual focus should be equally as responsive and precise when using the focus ring.

Among the three, photographers are sure to find at least one lens to add to their kit. And given the $600 price tag on each, we wouldn’t be surprised if some photographers picked up the entire trio, which is scheduled to be available in May.
