Sony just added another 16-35mm lens to its E-mount line: the $1,200 FE PZ 16-35mm f/4 G model. While similar in basic specs and price to its $1,350 Vario-Tessar T* ZA OSS sibling, there are some differences, most notably, the new model’s power zoom (PZ).

Sony FE PZ 16-35mm f/4 G Lens Features

The lens utilizes four XD linear motors to drive the zoom, delivering smooth and silent operation via a rocker switch on the lens barrel, making it ideal for video. But still photographers benefit from this design as well. Because the zoom is internal, the PZ lens doesn’t extend when zooming and its body is smaller and about 30% lighter than its ZA counterpart (12 ounces vs. 18.3 ounces), making the new lens much more portable. Remote zoom operation is possible with Sony’s Imaging Edge™ Mobile app, as well as other accessories.

In addition to the zoom rocker, the PZ lens features:

  • A manual focus ring and manual zoom ring on the lens body
  • An aperture ring, an Iris Lock Switch to prevent accidental aperture changes, an AF/MF button and a customizable focus hold button
  • With a nod towards video capture, the aperture ring can be de-clicked for smoothly (and silently) adjusting the aperture

Differences Between Sony FE PZ 16-35mm f/4 G Lens and Sony Vario-Tessar T* ZA OSS

Although both the PZ and ZA models are dust and moisture resistant, the PZ lacks the ZA’s OSS (optical steady shot). Instead, photographers can rely on their e-mount camera body’s internal image stabilization. The PZ does offer more control via the lens barrel; the 16-35mm ZA lens only provides focus and zoom rings.

Uses for Wedding and Portrait Photographers

With its constant f/4 aperture and highly versatile focal range, wedding and portrait photographers will find a wide variety of scenarios for this lens, whether shooting stills or video. With a minimum focus distance of 1.1 inches at 16mm and 9.5 inches at 35mm, the lens can also capture many of those ever-important wedding details and close-ups without having to switch to dedicated macro lenses.

The Sony FE PZ 16-35mm f/4 G lens will be available in June for around $1,200.
