Sigma’s 60-600mm Sports Lens: The First 10x Zoom for Mirrorless

Telephoto zooms typically have reaches of 70-300mm or 400-600mm, but Sigma’s newest E-Mount and L-Mount option covers both of those ranges in a single lens. Sigma’s 60-600mm f/4.5-6.3 DG DN OS Sports lens packs a wide zoom range into a weather-sealed lens. Sigma says that the lens is the first 10x zoom among lenses designed exclusively for mirrorless.

Sigma’s 60-600mm f/4.5-6.3 Sports lens uses a new linear motor with a High-Response Linear Actuator (HLA). The company says that this focus motor design results in fast and accurate autofocus. The HOLA design is a linear motor that doesn’t use gears, which also allows the motor to operate with less noise than a traditional autofocus motor.

Sigma has announced the 60-600mm f/4.5-6.3 DG DN OS sports lens for the U.Ss market. Promoted as the world’s “first and only 10x super telephoto zoom lens designed exclusively for mirrorless camera systems,” the lens is available in Sony E-Mount and Leica L-Mount.

Lenses with wider zoom ranges are typically heavier and often have narrower apertures—and the Sigma is no exception. The aperture starts at f/4.5 at 60mm and hits f/6.3 at full zoom, with the ability to step the aperture down to f/22 to f/32. The lens weighs in at nearly five and a half pounds, with the L-Mount hitting 88 oz. and the E-Mount 87.7 oz.

The lens builds in seven stops of stabilization at the wide end and six stops at the long end to help photographers handhold the large lens. That’s thanks to a newly developed stabilization algorithm. The lens also ships with a tripod socket.

As part of the Sports line, the lens houses several physical controls designed for quick adjustments. The lens houses a focus limiter, focus mode switch, an OS switch and a custom mode switch. The zoom length can also be locked in place and there’s an AFL button with compatible cameras. Both mounts support Direct Manual Focus and AF + MF, while the E-Mount is compatible with AF assist and the L-Mount is compatible with Sigma’s TC-1411 and TC-2011 teleconverters.

The lens is designed from 27 elements in 19 groups, including  Super Multi-layer coating as well as two FLD and three SLD elements. The exterior is dust and splash resistant, while the front glass has coating to help repel water and oil.

Sigma’s 60-600mm sports lens is set to start shipping mid-February 2023, with a list price of $1,999.
