Sigma's 20mm F2 DG DN Contemporary lens combines a broad field of view with a fast aperture, which is perfect for capturing gorgeous landscapes.

The widest and newest of its I-series primes, Sigma’s 20mm F2 DG DN Contemporary joins six others in this line. The new model, available for L-mount and Sony E-mount—combines a broad field of view with a fast aperture, which is perfect for capturing a bride and groom against a gorgeous landscape and getting scenes from low light receptions. Like its I-series siblings, this 20mm lens is solidly built thanks to its all-metal construction, which includes the body, internal metal parts and a metal lens hood. And, for those of us who prefer hands-on operation, there’s an aperture ring. A focus mode switch is included on the lens barrel and the L-mount model offers both linear and non-linear manual focus. The L-mount model is also compatible with Sigma’s optional USB Dock (UD-11).

Sigma’s 20mm F2 lens is compact and lightweight.

Compact and lightweight for its class, the 20mm F2 lens measures approximately 2.8 inches in length and weighs about 13 ounces. With a minimum focusing distance of 8.7 inches (and guaranteed bokeh when shot wide open), the 20mm lens will also serve wedding photographers well for closer focus shots of food and other details.

Optics and coatings are designed to help prevent various aberrations including saggital coma flare as well as ghosting. According to Sigma, the F2 I-series lenses, including the 20mm, show comparable optical performance (via an MTF chart) as the Sigma DSLR F1.4 art lenses. That alone suggests that this affordable ($699) wide-angle lens will deliver top-notch results.

The 20mm lens comes with a magnetic lens cap that should make it easier when attaching/detaching the cap. And, if you’re concerned about misplacing the lens cap, check out the Sigma CH-11—an optional magnetic cap holder that comes with a mini-carabiner so you can keep the cap close at hand and secured to your camera bag, camera strap or belt.

Sigma’s 20mm F2 DG DN Contemporary will be available on February 25 for $699.
