Photokina 2018: Sigma Reveals New Lenses and Camera Plans

September 27, 2018

By Greg Scoblete

Sigma pulled back the curtain on five new lenses across multiple product lines at Photokina and gave attendees a glimpse of its plans as a member of the newly formed L Mount Alliance.

Full-Frame Foveon & L Mount Plans
Sigma plans to release its own full-frame mirrorless camera in 2019. It will use a newly developed full-frame Foveon sensor and an L mount. As a result, the company will no longer produce SA (Sigma mount) cameras. It will continue to produce SA mount lenses, however.

Sigma will begin producing L mount lenses in 2019, starting with adding L mount options to the the existing Art series lenses.

Sigma also plans to introduce an EF-to-L mount adapter and an SA-to-L mount adapter in 2019. It will offer L mount conversion to its lens conversion service.

Beyond its mirrorless ambitions, Sigma revealed several new lenses. Here’s what’s coming:

Sigma 28mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art

The optical design of the 28mm (pictured above) will “thoroughly correct” for chromatic aberration and sagittal coma flare, as well as completely minimize distortion, according to Sigma. It features water- and oil-repellent coating on the front lens element and is weather-sealed. It features a Hyper Sonic Motor with an updated algorithm to drive autofocusing and will be sold in Sigma, Nikon, Canon and Sony E camera mounts. Pricing and availability were not disclosed.

Sigma 40mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art

The 40mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art employs three FLD (“F” Low Dispersion) glass elements and three SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements to correct axial chromatic aberration and magnification chromatic aberration. Sigma says it’s ideal for high-resolution filmmaking and is able to resolve 8K footage. Pricing and availability were not announced.

Sigma 56mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary

Sold in Micro Four Thirds and Sony E mounts, this lens supports Sony’s Fast Hybrid AF, eye AF and facial recognition. Pricing and availability weren’t announced.

Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 DG OS HSM Sports

The new flagship telephoto in the Sports line has a magnesium body and a dust- and splash-proof design. The front lens element is coated to repel oil and water. The lens features an Intelligent Optical Stabilization system with an acceleration sensor and an algorithm to ensure stability when panning in all directions, including diagonally. Pricing and availability wasn’t announced.

Sigma 60-600mm f/4.5-6.3 DG OS HSM Sports

The Sigma 60-600mm f/4.5-6.3 DG OS HSM Sports is, according to Sigma, the world’s first 10x optical zoom telephoto lens with a tele end of 600mm. It is optically stabilized with four stops of correction. It has a maximum magnification ratio of 1:3.3. It will ship in October for $1,999.
