Canon’s new RF lenses were just announced—the RF24mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM and the RF15-30mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM. Both wide-angle lenses are compact, lightweight and priced just under $600—excellent options for photographers on a budget or for those who want to add to their RF lens collection and both work with full-frame as well as APS-C sensor EOS R cameras.
Canon’s New RF Lenses: The RF24mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM Lens
The prime RF24mm lens is wide enough to be useful for environmental portraits and is well-suited for both still and video. Not only is it fast (think great bokeh when shot wide open at f/1.8) but the combination of wide-angle and the built-in STM (stepping) motor for smooth autofocus is great for vlogging as well as other video capture. And, this this lens also has Macro capabilities, focusing as close as 5.5 inches, so it will come in handy when shooting event/wedding details as well as product shots.

Other notable features include the image stabilization for up to 5.5 stops of correction or up to 6.5 stops on R-series cameras with in-body image stabilization (IBIS) such as the EOS R7. There’s also a programmable control ring. And, the lens weighs a mere 0.6 pounds and measures only 2.9 x 2.5 inches, so it’s easy to tuck into a camera bag for travel and handhold for vlogging. At $599.99, this lens offers a lot of value for the money.
Canon’s RF15-30mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM
If you’re looking for an even wider-angle lens with some versatility in focal range, you may want to check out the Canon RF15-30mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM. On a full-frame camera, this lens is well-suited for landscapes at its widest and works well for portraits at 30mm.
At f/4.5-6.3, it’s much slower than its 24mm sibling, but it also offers a stepping motor for smooth video AF. The lens is equipped with optical image stabilization with up to 5.0 stops of shake correction. But when mounted on an EOS R-series camera with IBIS (like the EOS R7), this 15-30mm zoom can deliver up to 7.0 stops of stabilization.

Although it’s not designated as a macro lens, the RF15-30mm zoom can focus as close as 5.1 inches—but only at 15mm using manual focus if you need or want to shoot some close-ups. Otherwise, the minimum focus distance is about 11 inches.
At 0.9 pounds and measuring about 3.5 inches in length, this little zoom is very portable and is small and light enough to use for handheld video capture, including vlogging/The price is right, too, at $549.99.
Both lenses are slated to ship in late August.
