New Camera Lenses, and Pricing, for the Sony E-mount

November 19, 2019

By David Alexander Willis

Sony’s E-mount covers both full-frame and APS-C mirrorless models through a single mount. Their Alpha cameras were originally based on the A-mount for DSLRs, but its the E-mount for mirrorless that is present in most Alpha Sony cameras and video solutions introduced since the mount itself in 2010.

Sigma’s latest lens for the Sony E-mount is the 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN Art. Also planned for the Leica L-Mount, the $1,099 lens will see an early December release. At half the price of the same Sony telephoto, it’s likely to be a big seller.

For moviemaking buffs, the $3,499 Sigma 28mm T1.5 FF is a cine lens for the Sony E-, the Canon EF and the ARRI PL mount that was announced in February of 2019.

Preceding it by only a month, a similar ART version with the same optics, the Sigma 28mm f/1.4 DG HSM ART, is available far below that at only $1,399.

Everyone has been making new models for Sony E-mount, while Sony’s own newest prime for the E-mount, the $750 Sony FE 35mm F/1.8, dates back to August. Weighing a little more than half a pound, the lens expanded their E-mount lens lineup to 34 full-frame models.

There are now 54 native Sony E-mount lenses in total when including their two newest zooms, the $1,399 E 16-55mm F2.8 G and $999 E 70-350mm F4.5-6.3 G OSS.

Both were announced for preorder with APS-C cameras, the Alpha 6600 and Alpha 6100, in late August. The Sony E 16-55mm has the equivalent view of a 24-82.5mm while the E 70-350mm offers a 105-525mm range.

The Tamron 70-180mm F/2.8 Di III VXD zoom, an unpriced model for full-frame Sony E-mount, was also unveiled for delivery in spring of 2020.

On October 24th, Tamron debuted three very affordable $349 primes with weather sealing for the Sony E-mount during a press conference that opened PhotoPlus.

The 24mm F/2.8 Di III OSD M1:2 and 35mm F/2.8 Di III OSD M1:2 are both scheduled for delivery tomorrow, November 20th. The 20mm F/2.8 Di III OSD M1:2 will be released this January.

Each is near macro at a 1:2 magnification ratio that will enhance foreground and subjects while compressing background elements. They all have a bright aperture of f/2.8 and matching length and front filter rings for fast swaps with optical filtration or video, drone and stabilization rigs.

Tokina’s remarkable full-frame macro option, also pictured in the header, is the $499 Fı́RIN 100mm F2.8 FE MACRO. Useful as a portrait length, it has true macro with a full 1:1 image magnification ratio so you actually see what you get. The subject size will be the same as seen in the preview.

Zeiss has been partnering with Sony on optics for more than twenty years now. They had their luxurious looking Batis line of top shelf full-frame autofocus lenses that are designed only for the Sony E-mount on display during PhotoPlus. The super cool digital exterior OLED panel lets you see lens settings in total dark.

Introduced at a rate of only about one new focal length a year, there are currently five models in the Batis family, an 18mm, 25mm, 40mm, 85mm and 135mm. Each Batis has fast, wide apertures from a f/1.8 to f/2.8.
