Sony Adds New Features to a7R III and a7 III

April 11, 2019

By Greg Scoblete

As promised earlier this year, Sony has new firmware (V 3.0) for the a7R III and a7 III that unlocks new autofocusing capabilities and time-lapse shooting.

Both cameras will gain Real-time Eye AF thanks to a new AI-derived algorithm. With the new Eye AF up and running, the cameras will be able to detect eyes even when a subject is looking down, partially obscured, turning or backlit. Real-time Eye AF is also available during continuous autofocusing. It’s also capable of locking onto animal eyes, a function that Sony promises to improve on in the future.

Firmware 3.0 also adds a built-in interval timer that can be set for anywhere between 1 and 60 seconds for up to 9,999 shots. AE tracking sensitivity can be set to high, mid or low  to reduce changes in exposure during time-lapse shooting.

Don’t Miss: Great tips for cinematic time lapses.

The firmware is free and can be downloaded here for a7R III owners and here for a7 III owners.
