Lenses
Sony just announced its latest G Master lens, the FE 50mm f/1.4 GM lens, which joins the larger, faster and more expensive ($2,000 vs. $1,300) 50mm f/1.2 lens in the GM lineup. While image quality topped the list of criteria when designing the new 50mm glass, mobility was also an important goal—often a challenging task for wide aperture lenses.

At 3 ¼ x 3 7/8 inches and 18.3 ounces, the 50mm f/1.4 GM lens is comparatively small and light. The new Sigma 50mm f/1.4 lens, for example, is only a few ounces heavier (approximately 23 ounces) and ½-inch longer. However, the Sony 50mm f/1.2 GM lens is relatively hefty at 3.5 x 4.38 inches and about 27.5 ounces. So, Sony achieved its goal to make a smaller and lighter larger aperture 50mm lens.

While 50mm lenses are standard for still photography, its versatility will appeal to videographers as well. Thanks to dual XD linear motors, autofocus speed looks promising as does the potential for silent operation by de-clicking the aperture ring. Although wide aperture lenses tend to have focus breathing issues, Sony claims to have reduced focus breathing with this lens. The lens can also be used with Sony’s breathing compensation feature in compatible cameras.
Other notable features include an Iris Lock—Sony’s first prime with this feature. The lens is equipped with dual, programmable focus hold buttons for an efficient workflow. A newly designed 11-blade iris to deliver smooth and lovely bokeh and the lens is dust and moisture proof. Minimum focus distance is quite good as well—as close as 16.14 inches with AF; 14.95 inches with manual focus.
Although we haven’t had any hands-on time with the new lens, early sample images look excellent with lots of detail and lovely bokeh. Beyond the promise of speed and gorgeous photos, we’re huge fans of the 50mm field of view. It not only represents the way we see the world through our eyes but it’s a highly versatile lens that fits with any number of different photographic scenarios.
The Sony full-frame 50mm f/1.4 GM lens will be available in May for an estimated $1,300.
