Rokinon’s new 85mm F1.4 II prime may be small, but the new lens still fits in an upgraded autofocus system. Announced on July 28, the new Rokinon 85mm F1.4 FE—or the Samyang 85mm f/1.4 FE outside the U.S.—is a smaller, lighter lens than the first generation optic. Made for Sony E-Mount, the lens also sits at a $799 price point.

The lens weighs under 18 ounces and measures less than 4 inches long. Rokinon says that makes the lens the smallest and lightest wide-aperture 85mm for Sony E-Mount. Despite the smaller size, it still fits in 11 elements in 8 groups.

Another significant upgrade is the autofocus system. The company says that the new autofocus system is quieter, faster, and more accurate than the first generation lens. It uses a linear STM motor and is capable of focusing on subjects 2.79 feet from the front of the lens. The company also notes that the autofocus was upgraded with videographers in mind with quieter adjustments and minimal focus breathing.

The side of the lens barrel includes a focus hold button to keep the focus locked at a specific distance without switching to manual focus. A custom switch allows the ring to have two functions—changing focus or aperture.

The company says that the lens is weather-sealed in seven spots. The lens is also finished with a rubber, textured focus ring and a matte finish to the rest of the lens barrel.

Arguably the most enticing aspect of the new lens is the price. At $799, Rokinon’s 85mm F1.4 II is significantly less than the Sony FE 85mm f1/.4 GM, which retails for $1,798. The lens is currently available for pre-order directly from Rokinon.

The lens is part of Samyang’s 50th anniversary celebration and the third lens to see a second generation to commemorate the anniversary. Known as Rokinon in the U.S., the company headquarters is based in Seoul, Republic of Korea.
