Nikon’s latest mirrorless lens, the NIKKOR Z 28mm f/2.8, brings the number of Z-series primes to an even dozen. Not to be confused with the earlier released Z 28mm f/2.8 Special Edition (SE), designed to match the retro-styling of the Nikon Z fc APS-C camera that we reviewed here, this non-SE lens features a matte-black body with a simpler, more modern look.

The smallest and lightest Z-series lens to date, this tiny lens measures about 1.7 inches in length and weighs a mere 5.46 ounces. Because it’s so portable, it’s perfect for those times when you want to travel light. And it fits the bill when you need to be unobtrusive, whether you’re shooting documentary wedding photography or street style.

Dust- and drip-resistant, the NIKKOR Z 28mm f/2.8 is protected against the elements (at least to a certain extent) when you’re shooting a beach wedding or if you get caught in a rain shower. The control ring can be assigned specific functions such as aperture and exposure compensation, providing more convenient access for uninterrupted shooting.

Nikon has also considered the double-duty of stills and videos that many of us photographers are tasked with during assignments, promising extremely quiet operation, consistent exposure and compensation for focus breathing during video capture.

Given that all but two of Nikon’s Z-series (the Z fc and Z 50) mirrorless cameras are full-frame, the 28mm field of view offers a wide variety of uses—from environmental portraits and group shots to landscapes. Its fast aperture extends its usefulness to low light as well as scenarios where bokeh plays an important role. Better yet, this little lens can focus as close 0.63 feet so you won’t have to change lenses when capturing detail shots at a wedding.

Before you scoff at its $300 price, remember that Nikon has a couple of nifty-fifty F-mount lenses for cheaper that produce razor-sharp images. We expect (or hope) the new and affordable NIKKOR Z 28mm f/2.8 lens lives up to the reputation of those inexpensive 50mm models.
