We never get tired of watching moving love stories, but our afternoon office obsession today is this historic home wedding video from 1923.
Italian couple Silvio Della Seta and Iole Campagnano were married in the central Italian city of Perugia on Oct. 14, 1923, and industrialist Salvatore Di Segni recorded the whole thing on 35mm film.
While it’s pretty clear the subjects were very aware of being filmed (and even mugging a bit for the camera), the best moment is around 1:35 when Silvio gives Iole a big smack on the lips. Her embarrassment is an endearing testament to how social mores have changed, and it’s a joyous moment to witness.
Screened in Rome after being restored and digitized by Italy’s Central Institute for the Restoration and Conservation of Library and Archival Heritage, the clips are believed to be one of the earliest images of Italian Jews.
The sad ending is that the groom’s parents were—20 years later—taken to Auschwitz where they perished. But their ebullience on their son’s wedding day is now a relic that every family can relate to.
