When UK wedding photographer Joe Kinerman first spoke to couple Tom and Josie about their wedding in Southend-on-Sea in Essex, England, they had already rescheduled their date once and reduced their guest count from 250 down to 30 because of the pandemic. By the time Kinerman met with them, they were prepared for a masked (at times) and socially distanced wedding. “I wanted to make sure I still made the day special for them,” says Kinerman. “I explained it was still really important we tell the story of the day and didn’t hide from the current situation.

Luckily, bride and groom agreed and were down for some fun shots with their masks on. “It’s always really important to me that the photography is a true representation of the day.”

To keep everyone safe, including himself, Kinerman tried to keep a little more distance than normal when possible and wore a mask the whole time. “Due to the limited number of people who attended, staying socially distanced was relatively easy.”

The only real challenge that arose, says Kinerman, was that he wanted to find somewhere quiet to do the couple shoot since the bride and groom were a little nervous about it. “I’ve used the fairground [shown above] for a fashion shoot before, so I contacted the owners and asked if we could use the location. It’s currently closed down but they were happy to allow us in to shoot for an hour.”

Restrictions aside, Kinerman was more than happy to get working again. “It was so nice to be out there photographing weddings again; I’ve missed it so much this year!”
