Did you see our most recent Photos of the Day? In our daily series highlighting some of the most interesting images in wedding and portrait photography, the editorial staff asks the creatives behind the photos to detail the backstory and technical approach. Here’s what caught our eye this week.

Photographer’s Military Husband and Their Son

Krystal Weir noticed her son looking through the window at his father as he left for work for the day. “This day, my husband stopped to say goodbye again through the window,” Weir recalls. “I said, ‘Knuckles,’ and he put his little fist up to the window. I had my camera near me and I anticipated what may happen”—her husband meeting their son’s tiny knuckles with his—”and was ready to take the shot.”

Lip Sync Battle: How to Enter Reception Before First Dance

Photographer ericaJ was ready for this couple, who entered their reception with a lip sync battle to a montage of Drake. She had set up two off-camera flashes to light the scene. “This moment took place during one of bride’s rounds, after she had delivered her lines, and took a moment to dance to the beat,” she says.

An Elopement Weathers the Storm: Scottish Typhoon Edition

Virginia Strobel of Virginia and Evan was standing in the center of a elopement ceremony in the Scottish Highlands, the guests gathered in a circle around her. Scotland had experienced a typhoon more powerful than it had encountered in a number of decades, so, Strobel recalls, “the wind and rain were relentless. We had to change locations because of the weather and the tourists, but they took it all in stride and embraced each moment.”

In Malaysia, New Normal Means No Wedding Ceremony—Just Portraits

During the portrait shoot, Remy Samsee of Remy & Co wore a mask, abided by social distancing protocols and made sure to avoid crowded areas. “Because of that, I needed to be creative to choose the right place, and this old factory came across as a photo shoot location,” he explains. It was a relatively quick shoot, which Samsee found somewhat strange. “It’s challenging to get my photography momentum back after four months,” he says, “but it’s a good experience and I’m thankful to be back even with this new norm phase.”

Bright Sun as Photographer’s Backlight in Styled Wedding Shoot

For this styled shoot at Sunset Hills in Southern California, Kenisha Gill wanted to honor both the grandness of the space and the detail of the dress. “I placed the bride in the shaded portion of the space,” Gill says, then she directed the model to walk and let the bright sun act as backlight to “draw focus on her and the large overhead lamps.”
