Reframing in Cambridge

Cambridge has a rich bike culture, says documentary-style wedding shooter and Cambridge native Chris Boland, who captured this bride and her bridesmaids as they made their way from the hotel to the University in England, where the ceremony was taking place.

“Because I was walking with them from one location to another, I had two cameras and a couple of bags on my shoulders,” Boland recalls, so when the vision for this frame popped into his head, he had to move quickly and “quite inelegantly,” he adds, to get ahead and perch himself at a low angle. Boland often prefers to have the subject at the center of his photos, he notes, but for this particular moment, he thought it best to rethink his go-to composition so that he could include the pervasive bicycles in the frame without it looking haphazard. “The center focus wouldn’t have worked for this shot,” he says. This way, all of the elements fit nicely into the frame and, as Boland says, “it all came together!”
