Two years ago, we interviewed Canadian-based photographer Cassandra Jones of Noelle Mirabella Photography about her experience photographing a rare set of identical female quadruplet newborns. Recently, Jones had the opportunity to photograph the sisters again. Only this time, the subjects in front of her lens were rambunctious toddlers instead of sleepy newborns.

The most challenging obstacle for Jones didn’t have anything to do with the imagery or setup. And dressing the newborns in color-matching knits was a pleasure for Jones, who styled the shoot herself. Instead, she says, it was getting all four toddlers comfortable that created some difficulty. “If one was unhappy, they all felt it and suddenly there were four unhappy babies,” she explains. It took a team of trusty adults to keep all four quadruplets upbeat and smiley. “Grandma, my assistant and I took the two least-happy babies and won them over. Then we brought the other two girls over… It worked brilliantly!”

Jones set up the shoot with her 200mm f/2.0 lens, so in post, her priority was making sure each sister’s face was sharp. “I didn’t add elements in Photoshop, but I often focus-stack to get them all in perfect focus and harmony,” she explains. And luckily, since the quadruplets were well behaved, it only took a few fun songs and props to get the results seen in these precious portraits. “It was a real, effortless and natural response from the girls,” Jones notes. “I will take a shot like that over a ‘look-at-me-and-say-cheese’ photo any day.”
