Garden Party

October 4, 2017

By Laura Brauer

York, UK-based photographers Chris and Verity Sansom were thrilled when they discovered that the wedding and reception they were covering would take place in locations very sentimental to the bride and groom. After exchanging vows at the bride’s parents’ local village church, the newlyweds and their entire wedding party headed to the bride’s parents’ home for food and drinks.

“We have always stressed to couples that a wedding is not about how much money you spend on the flowers or the décor,” Verity says. “It’s about the families and the connections between everyone.” When she saw that people were taking their food with them to the house’s garden to congratulate the newlyweds and just chat, Verity had the urge to capture the overall intimacy of how this (and the wedding as a whole) felt.

“I wanted to make sure I captured the whole scene, so I went to the back of the garden to try and frame the house next to the other two houses in the row,” Verity recalls. “I liked how that gave the photograph more story and that it was clear to see it was a house on a street. Emma stood in the perfect position and the clouds were just starting to darken for the rain that came later! It was a busy scene in a small environment, and that’s what I quite loved about this image.”
