Eye-Catching Portraits and Photos of the Week

September 12, 2022

By Jacqueline Tobin

It’s week 5 of Fujifilm’s Fujikina NYC 2022 takeover of our Photo of the Day and Week series, with the spotlight on five visual creators making images with Fujifilm’s latest X Series cameras. This week’s featured photographer: Jaida Grey Eagle, of St. Paul, Minnesota, who created her Zapotec Weavers project exclusively for the Fujikina event.

The photojournalist graduated from the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico, with a BA in Fine Arts, and an emphasis on photography. She is passionate about bringing awareness to indigenous issues, especially those affecting women. She has led multiple media roles and documentary projects, often concentrating on communities of color—a subject she covers as a Report for America Fellow, with the independent digital newsroom Sahan Journal. She is also a member of Women Photograph, Indigenous Photograph, and 400 Years Project, and spends time researching indigenous photography at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts for an upcoming exhibition, focused on Native American and Canadian photographers.

In her most recent project, Jaida documents the lives of a family of traditional farmers and weavers in Oaxaca, Mexico, who are preserving the land and customs of their ancestors while also teaching others the art of indigenous weaving and dyeing techniques.
