This portrait of 2-year-old Amari was taken at Las Vegas photographer Lisa Wright’s home using Savage Seamless Background Paper, a large umbrella just off center, and a silver round reflector at the toddler’s feet.

Part of Wright’s series “Black Kaleidoscope“—a celebration of black diversity through portraiture—this image is extra special for Wright, because the subject is her grandson.

“When my oldest daughter was 5 years old, she had a red toy kaleidoscope that she called a telescope” the photographer explains. “She found great joy twisting the kaleidoscope’s ring to see the endless variety of colors and patterns created. ‘Black Kaleidoscope’ is a telescope of sorts, bringing into focus a rich tapestry of African-American shades, textures and amazing faces that tell stories about our history and our future.”

The first nine images of Wright’s series were supported in part by the Nevada Arts Council, a state agency that receives support from the National Endowment for the Arts and the state of Nevada.
