A Look Back at Summers in Brittany, by Sherrie Nickol

July 27, 2020

By Jacqueline Tobin

There’s nothing like a pandemic to make one look back and fondly recall a simpler time that once was. New York-based photographer Sherrie Nickol does just that with this image—titled “Sunbathers”—as well as with the photo collection it originates from, Les étés en Bretagne (Summers in Brittany). Nickol photographed all of the images in the series at various beachside resorts located on both the north and south coasts of Brittany, France.

All of the images in the collection—some of which can be viewed in the gallery at top—were photographed with a Contact RTS camera and either a 50mm/1.4 or 85mm/2.8 Zeiss lens, and Kodak Tri-X film, ISO 400. © Sherrie Nickol

“When my son turned six, our family began to spend part of each summer in Brittany,” says Nickol. “We always rented the same home near the seaside—a short car ride from our relatives who lived in an old stone house on a working farm.”

Nickol says that as she and her family traverse their first summer of COVID-19, this series has “become even more meaningful to me, being both photographer and traveler. I miss the social interaction of lovers and families, bathers and friends, and hope for a time when all of us can return to the experience we have cherished in the past.”
