A photo by Annie Leibovitz of soccer rivals Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo shared over the weekend is already among Instagram’s most-loved posts. The image, captured as part of a marketing campaign for Louis Vuitton, show the two deep in concentration over a game of chess being played on the checkerboard pattern of one of the brand’s trunks rather than a chess board. But while the photo is being praised for getting two of the upcoming FIFA World Cup’s most popular players together, behind the scenes footage reveal that they weren’t—the image is apparently a composite.
Leibovitz used a Fujifilm GFX100S for the shoot and can be seen showing photos on the back of the camera to Messi. The two athletes were supposedly asked to pose in their respective positions at different times and in different studios, before being composited together by Leibovitz during post-production. According to Digital Camera World, “Messi is in the natural location that was selected for the final image, and Ronaldo was actually posing in front of a plain gray wall, to make it easier to fuse him into the original setting.”
The photo by Annie Leibovitz has already garnered more than 37 million likes on Ronaldo’s Instagram page and 28 million on Messi’s IG—along with more than 5 million likes on Louis Vuitton’s IG. Ronaldo, with 496 million followers, is the most followed person on Instagram and Messi is the second most followed with 373 million followers. Put the two most followed people in one photo, and the post easily entered Instagram’s top ten most liked posts. An egg with a wish for viral fame still holds the record. But, the post has passed the second most-liked photo on Instagram, which, ironically, was also on Ronaldo’s account—a pregnancy announcement for Ronaldo and Georgina Rodriguez. That announcement had close to 33 million likes.

On Instagram, some fans are calling the image the “picture of the century,” “iconic,” and “legendary” as the image juxtaposes the athletes with a game of chess, likely making a statement about the mental strategy involved on the field. The photo’s caption reads, “Victor is a state of mind.” The trunk also bears a resemblance to the Louis Vuitton case used to transport the actual World Cup.
With BTS footage showing Leibovitz photographing the athletes as the opposite side of the chessboard-trunk appear empty, most fans are still calling the photo iconic but realizing that the two players were not actually sitting across from each other, or even in the same room, has left other fans disappointed. The FIFA World Cup began on Nov. 20 in Qatar and is expected to finish on Dec. 18.
