When Amazon announced it would shutter photo review platform DPReview as part of budget cuts earlier this year, many photographers responded in distress, some even attempting to save the website’s years of reader forums and review archives. After the outcry, Amazon has switched gears and officially completed the sale of the website. Announced on June 20, Gear Patrol is now the new owner of DPReview.com.
Gear Patrol, an online publication focused on helping consumers find the right gear and products, says that the “core” staff of DPReview will remain with the publication. The sale will also save the website’s years of reviews archives as well as user forums. User accounts have also transferred to Gear Patrol.
“GearPatrol is a natural home for the next phase of DPReview’s journey, and I’m excited to see what we can accomplish together,” Scott Everett, General Manager of DPReview.com, wrote in a statement. “I want to reassure you that we remain firmly committed to what makes DPReview great: the best camera reviews in the business, industry-leading photography news and features, and one of the most active photography communities anywhere on the internet.”
The statement further notes that DPReview’s editorial coverage will remain the same, with the archives also intact. Everett also notes that the website expects to evolve “based on customer feedback and the rapidly changing state of the publishing industry.”
“DPReview is the internet’s original center of gravity for photography,” Eric Yang, CEO and Founder of Gear Patrol, said in a statement. “As a photography enthusiast, I’ve been an avid reader since its earliest days. We’re honored to receive the baton from Amazon and help the DPReview team craft the next phase of their story. Editorial integrity and the passionate community are the heart of DPReview and we plan to uphold that charter.”
This year marks DPReview’s 25th year in business. Amazon did not disclose the sales figures.
