Photokina Recap: 4K, Blazing Fast Cameras and More!

Photokina got off to a roaring start today with several big announcements from some of the industry’s heavy hitters. We’ve told you about Canon’s big update to the 7D and Panasonic’s interesting new LX100. Here’s what you may have missed:

Samsung threw down the gauntlet to Sony and Panasonic with its new high-end mirrorless camera, the NX1. Capable of 4K recording in the new HEVC codec, the NX1 has a supped up processor, blazing fast burst mode (15fps with AF tracking) and much more. Get the details here.

Olympus added a new 40-150mm telephoto lens to its Pro series of advanced optics and announced some new firmware for its OM-D E-M1 camera that will enable USB tethering plus a few other tricks. The firmware will be available in a new silver edition of the E-M1 and for existing cameras in October.

Sony took the opportunity to build out its family of FE E-mount lenses for cameras like the hot A7/7S/7R. The 16-35mm F/4 lens will carry a $1,350 price tag plus dust and moisture resistance. Be sure to hit the link for more details on Sony’s growing family of accessories, too.

In addition to the 7D Mark II, Canon trotted out the new advanced G7X compact camera with a large sensor and DSLR-style image processing. There were also three new lenses added to Canon’s EF lineup. Check it out.

Besides the Lumix LX100, Panasonic had another trick up its sleeve in Germany: the GM5, a mirrorless camera with a live viewfinder boasting 100 percent coverage. A respectable burst mode plus the ability to stitch short video clips together with some cool effects are among the GM5’s most interesting features.
