“With professional features that include 19 Film Simulation modes, advanced autofocusing, and a vast range of exposure controls, the GFX50S II provides limitless opportunities for creativity,” says Fujifilm's Victor Ha.

Fujifilm has just announced the newest addition to its GFX medium-format mirrorless camera lineup—the 51.4-megapixel GFX50S II. And at $3,999, it’s quite affordable, especially for medium format.

“The GFX50S II offers the perfect mix of accessibility and flexibility,” says Victor Ha, senior director of marketing and product development for Fujifilm North America Corporation, Electronic Imaging Division. “With professional features that include 19 Film Simulation modes, advanced autofocusing, and a vast range of exposure controls, the GFX50S II provides limitless opportunities for creativity.”

The GFX50S II inherits many features from the GFX100S, including the rear screen tilts.

The GFX50S II is the company’s third 50MP, medium-format mirrorless, and the first to feature in-camera stabilization. It’s also Fujifilm’s least expensive medium format to date, and inherits many features from the GXF100S, including a large, high resolution electronic viewfinder, rear screen tilts (in three directions, allowing high- and low-angle shooting in both portrait and landscape orientation), and touch-sensitive camera setting change capabilities.

The GFX50S II Medium-Format Mirrorless—Key Features:

  • 51MP 44 x 33mm CMOS sensor
  • In-body stabilization offering up to 6.5EV correction
  • 3.2″ rear touchscreen with two-axis tilt
  • 3.69M dot OLED viewfinder with 0.77x (equiv) magnification
  • Top-panel status LCD
  • 19 Film Simulation Modes
  • Pixel-shift high-res mode gives 205MP images
  • Battery rated to 440 shots per charge (CIPA)
  • Full HD video at up to 30p, with headphone and mic sockets
  • 200MP multi-shot mode available
  • Two UHS-II SD card slots

According to Fujifilm, the camera’s specialized design with uniquely small, light-collecting micro lenses on the sensor create a wide gap between adjacent pixels, which reportedly maximizes light resolution per pixel for increased image sharpness. “This increased light-receiving area per pixel,” says the company, “provides a high ISO sensitivity, a wide dynamic range, and tonality, and provides precise highlight and shadow clipping.”
