Sony’s New Advanced Compact Camera Breaks the Speed Barrier

July 25, 2019

By Greg Scoblete

Sony’s newest advance compact camera blurs the line between still and video capture by hitting burst speeds that are faster than traditional video frame rates.

The RX100 VII debuts a new Single Burst Shot mode that snaps up to seven JPEG/RAW images at either 90, 60 or 30fps–allowing you to isolate the perfect shot from a rapid-fire burst. It can also deliver a more conventional burst mode of 20fps with AF and AE tracking and no live view blackout.

The RX100 VII uses a newly developed 1-inch stacked 20.1-megapixel Exmor RS CMOS image sensor and BIONZ X image processor. It has 357 focal-plane phase-detection AF points and 425 contrast-detection AF points and can deliver what Sony claims is the world’s fastest autofocus acquisition at .02 sec. thanks to a new lens drive control.

The camera will also incorporate Sony’s new Real-time Tracking and Real-time Eye AF autofocusing technologies for keeping moving subjects in focus. The system works for both stills and video.

It has a built-in Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* 24-200mm f/2.8-4.5 lens.

As for video, the camera records 4K/30p (3840 x 2160) with full pixel readout and no pixel binning and improved image stabilization. It supports Sony’s film-friendly color profiles (S-Log3, S-Gamut3, Hybrid Log Gamma) and can record videos vertically, to appease the Instagrammers. There’s a mic jack and a flip-up LCD display, to appease the vloggers. Speaking of vloggers, Sony will offer a Grip Kit that includes a small handheld grip, bracket with accessory shoe and a pair of rechargeable battery packs for $1,300.

Additional features of the RX100 Mark VII include:

  • Tme-lapse recording
  • Sslow-motion video recording at 960 fps
  • Pop-up viewfinder
  • ISO range of 100-12,800 (64-25,600 expandable)
  • Electronic shutter up to 1/32,000
  • Wi-Fi, NFC, Bluetooth
  • USB 2.0 (Micro terminal)
  • Battery life of 240-310 images, depending on viewfinder/monitor use

The RX100 VII compact camera will ship in August 2019 for approximately $1,200. It’s available for pre-order now.
