Photographer Adrian Octavius Walker captured this portrait of Mychael Jamal for his series We Matter, a collection of conceptual portraits that aim to prod traditions surrounding beauty and perceptions of Black men in America.

“The intimacy depicted in each photograph erases the possibility of threat often assigned to Black men and instead pushes the viewer to see the power of kinship within the Black community,” reads the official description of the We Matter series. “Inspired by his investigations of the Black body, dynamics of the Black family, and archival work related to the African-American experience, Walker works in both film and digital-format photography to create intimate portraits based on his studies of human interactions in urban settings that share untold stories.”

This photo was part of See in Black, a joint effort of 80+ Black photographers who sold original prints to benefit five different nonprofits that are working to, they say, “dismantle white supremacy and systemic oppression.”
