As Real as it Gets: A Documentary Approach

When it comes to photographing a wedding, who wouldn’t want a really fun and laid-back couple to work with, right? “Christina and Anthony were just a really fun couple from start to finish to photograph,” says Justine Boulin, whose favorite way to photograph is with a documentary approach, or, as she puts it, “simply documenting what is. They, along with their party, were relaxed and ready to just enjoy the day. As their photographer that made it really easy to just get in there and do what I was there to do.”

Some of Boulin’s favorite parts of the day came after the ceremony, held at St. Augustine’s Parish in Vancouver. “They had rented a huge party limo bus for them and their closest friends to drive around and enjoy the afternoon,” she says. “We stopped at a few parks, they enjoyed some food (McDonalds!) and then spent a few hours at one of their friend’s bars just hanging out and playing pool.”

Even more fun, Boulin adds, is that the party limo really was a party. “It was dark and I had to really push my ISO but I’m so happy I was along for that part of the day because those are some of my favorite photos from the day—of them and their friends all celebrating together.”

But it wasn’t all fun and pole dancing in the limo! One challenge, says the photographer, was that it was “really hot with a full sun that day and wedding party photos were planned for the middle of the day. I had scouted out some nice areas that provided a bit of shade and nice light around our Art Gallery here in Vancouver, but when arriving there was a huge protest going on.” Boulin had to quickly think a bit on the fly for some little spots close by. And those photos (below), she says, ended up working out much better than the original plan. “Maybe it was meant to be.”

The other challenge was the lighting, as the venue and church, she adds. were dark and the limo bus was dark and very crowded (50 of their closest friends “sardined in”). “There were a lot of throw-aways, but I’m so happy I came along for it all because the images I did get are some of my favorites from the day and I know that getting those photos with their friends was very important to them.”
