Phase One Updates to Capture One 20

December 5, 2019

By David Alexander Willis

For macOS and Windows, Phase One has released their Capture One 20 studio and photography image management software, improving on the previous Capture One 12 with brand new features and enhancements.

Capture One Pro 20 has better noise reduction.

To speed up image edits for large volume photography sets like weddings and events, they’ve added keyboard shortcuts and a “switch to next” mode that will save up to 50 percent of keystrokes while sorting imagery.

The Noise Reduction Tool has been improved to reduce chromatic and luminosity image aberrations particularly noticeable in shadows and contrast. Capture One Pro 20 optimizes the image to a database of cameras and their individual ISO patterns.

Two new color channels have been added to the Basic Color Editor.

A redesigned Basic Color Editor module gives intuitive click-and-drag controls over hue, saturation and lightness of colors through a new Direct Color Editor tool.

With eight color ranges instead of the previous six, it has a preview tool that works alongside the Advanced Color Editor and Skin Tone tools. The Basic Color Editor can now also be applied to individual layers.

The Crop tool now has more visible, bigger handles as well as rotations, auto-centering and aspect ratio locks.

An updated Crop tool gives automatic centering and crop rotations as well as locks for common aspect ratios. Layers and masks can be copy-and-pasted to photos of different formats and sizes.

The High Dynamic Range tool has an expanded feature set to target tonal recovery of highlights, shadow details and blacks.

The Basic Color Editor has click-and-drag spot editing for hue, lightness and saturation.

There are also Capture One Pro 20 versions for Sony and Fujifilm at a $8-a-month subscription or $129 single purchase, respectively. These only support two computers rather than the three supported by the normal version of Capture One Pro 20.

Jumping from Capture One 12 to Capture One 20, the software is developed in-house by Phase One as a tailor-made image editing solution for their medium-format cameras.

Phase One is based in Copenhagen, Denmark and has offices in New York, Tokyo, Cologne, Shanghai and Tel Aviv.
