Google Garry Winogrand and you’ll find a portfolio of offbeat New York City street shots that are almost all black and white. Overlooked by history was the fact that the photographer known as the master of moments was just as prolific in color, having created about 45,000 color slides in the 1950s and ‘60s. Of that lot, the Brooklyn Museum is sharing more than 450 of them, spanning 17 projects, all rarely or never-before-seen by the public eye.

The people who walked by Winogrand may have noticed that he carried two cameras around his neck; one contained a roll of black-and-white film while the other held color. Often, he snapped one right after the other, differentiating the two by only a few seconds. Treating both with equal weight reveals new meaning in how this legendary photographer saw his work, and how we will perceive him and his impact on color photography for generations to come.

Garry Winogrand: Color is on display at the Brooklyn Museum through December 8, 2019.Below is a selection of images from the exhibition.
