Meet the Newest Lume Cube: The Lume Cube AIR

Lume Cube has released a new variant of its eponymous LED, the Lume Cube AIR.

The petite AIR delivers 400 LUX of daylight-balanced light at 1M with a 60-degree beam angle. You’ll enjoy a CRI of 90.

The AIR weighs 2 ounces and is waterproof to a depth of 30 feet. It offers Bluetooth remote control, where users can control light intensity, light mode (continuous or flash) as well as view battery life and more. Brightness is adjustable from 0-100 percent.

As far as mounting options, the AIR boasts a built-in magnet plus a 1/4-20 thread for mounting. Unlike the original, the AIR includes white and orange diffusers. You’ll also find a charging cable and a lanyard in the box.

The AIR costs $70 and is available now.

We’ve had a little hands-on time with the AIR and it’s quite impressive, considering the price.

The compact light has a single button that turns it on and controls brightness over three steps (more fine-grained control is available in the app). Once it’s on, the pairing process is seamless and the free Lume-X app gives you all the basic controls mentioned above.

The Lume Cube AIR can indeed flash, but not very quickly—instead, it simply turns on when you’re in flash mode and then off when the app’s camera finishes taking a photo. That said, there are two strobe modes that flash the light in rapid succession, but the strobing isn’t connected to triggering the camera. (Lume Cube says you can configure seven strobe modes in total.)

While it’s extremely portable, the beam spread is fairly wide and the fall off is gentle so you’re not getting a powerful hotspot on skin.

One thing we did notice was that the battery does dip fairly quickly. That’s not surprising given the size and relative power of the light, but it’s something to consider. On the plus side, you can configure and control multiple Lume Cube AIRs from your phone.
