A look at Photoshop on the iPad.

Adobe is hosting its annual MAX Conference today and, as per custom and tradition, has revealed a slew of new features coming to Photoshop and Lightroom. Here’s an overview.

Photoshop CC

  • A new content-aware fill workspace: You’ll now have  a live preview panel of how your pixel selection will determine the final fill so you can watch the image change as you brush on or erase the source content, all before committing to the change. Once confirmed, the non-destructive output setting will automatically create a new layer with the selection, providing the intended visual output, while leaving your original image untouched.
  • Frame Tool: The new Frame Tool lets you create a placeholder for an image size or shape, and will auto-scale your image to fit the shape. Additionally, you can convert any shape or text layer into a Frame for easy masking.
  • Symmetry Painting: Formerly a test preview, this new feature creates mirrored brush strokes along a symmetry axis during painting.
  • Smaller Tweaks: A host of small tweaks you can read about here.
  • Photoshop CC on an iPad: According to Adobe, you’ll soon have access to a version of Photoshop, including the ability to open and edit PSD files, on an iPad. The same file can re-opened and edited on a desktop as well. It won’t have complete feature parity at launch, but will share the same code base as the desktop version so that it will be able to support those features (in iPad-optimized form) in the future.

Lightroom CC

  • People view: Using AI algorithms, Lightroom CC can identify and tag all photos with people in them so that you can filter images with specific people in them.
  • Search suggestions: Similar to Google’s auto-complete, Lightroom CC will now offer suggestions as you’re typing into the search bar. The suggestions can include camera metadata, keywords, locations and more.
  • Share tab: In this new tab you’ll find all shared albums you’ve created on lightroom.adobe.com. This tab will also enable you to publish images directly to Adobe Stock and, in the future, to third-party services like photo labs.

Lightroom Classic CC

  • Improved tethering with Canon cameras: Adobe promises Canon photographers should see a 1.5-2x speed improvement in image transfers when shooting tethered.
  • One-step HDR panorama merge: This feature will automatically compile a set of bracketed exposures into an HDR panoramic image with a single click.
  • Depth Range Masking:  This enables you to leverage the depth information captured by many leading smartphones to make precise selections and isolate subjects faster.
