Photos of the Week
When this groom licked frosting off of his bride’s face, she wasn’t annoyed. As documented by Jacqueline Connor, she found her new husband’s playfulness quite amusing. “Some brides would have been upset at frosting being smeared on their face, but Lily wasn’t,” the photographer recalls.
The wedding took place in the couple’s backyard in Lancaster, New York, a small town near Buffalo. Connor (who won first place with this image in the WPPI Second Half Members Only Competition’s Wedding Photojournalism category), describes the nuptials as a worry-free affair—no stress, no agenda, just a celebration of love. “Matt and Lily were not remotely worried about what a wedding is supposed to be and instead focused on what they wanted their wedding to be,” Connor explains. “Everything was DIY and focused on celebrating with family.”
So when the groom leaned over to help clean the bride’s cake-smeared face, Connor channeled her background as a newspaper photographer to capture the peak of the moment. “Matt was clearly just having a blast while Lily was laughing… It’s a wonderful representation of how they live life together—they make everything an adventure.”
