Watch out! You never know when a Champagne cork is about to pop.

That’s certainly the lesson these girls learned during their getting-ready session at this private home in Port Angeles, Washington. According to photographer Samantha McFarlen, the girls were all practicing their cute “surprised faces” as the bride pretended to open the bubbly. “But then the bride unexpectedly popped the bottle and caught all of them off guard,” she says. “This was their authentic reaction to the loud noise!”

The lighting wasn’t perfect, notes McFarlen of the indoor space, but the natural reactions she captured were priceless. “It’s one thing to pose for a Champagne photo with faked surprise faces, but this was 100 percent them having the sh*t scared out of them!”
