Secrets in the Berry Trees

Bay area photography duo Helena and Laurent Martin have the fortune of living in a place where adventurous couples from around the world gather their loved ones (or simply elope) for destination wedding celebrations. This couple, for example, flew from London just to exchange vows in San Francisco’s majestic City Hall, and later, the photographers took them on a ride to explore the city’s photo ops.

“This is a normal practice for us,” Laurent asserts. “We often drive our couples around because we will see things on the side of the road and just pull over and start shooting. It allows for the spontaneity and flexibility that our process really depends on, and in order for it to work, it makes all the difference that we are riding together. Plus it’s more fun.”

They were driving through the Presidio, a national park in San Fran that also moonlighted as a U.S. Army military fort, when these bright red berry trees—overgrowing in front of what were homes for military captains during the Civil War—caught their eye. “We took a U-turn immediately,” Laurent says. “The couple had decided to wear these retro-vintage outfits and the whole day they had been talking about The Man in the High Castle, a book that takes place in a dystopian, Nazi-occupied San Francisco.”

They had an idea.

“We told them to stand back to back, and they clutched each other’s hands all on their own. By covering their faces, the subjects are involved in a secret that the viewer is not privy to, and it gives the image this quirky and mysterious vibe that reads perfectly as secret agents, or maybe time travelers. In any case, we love it, and the couple did too.”
