This bride and groom met while playing tennis as kids, and they both went on the compete at the national level in junior tennis and got scholarships to Division I schools for the sport. So, when they got married, it was only natural that they’d incorporate the sport that brought them together—the only question was: how?
“The bride wanted my creative input,” says Chicago-based wedding photographer Kenny Kim. The obvious solution was to set up a portrait session on the tennis courts, however, because the wedding was in March, “most of the courts around Chicago did not have the nets set up,” he says. Instead, Kim suggested this unique location—the Nature Boardwalk at the Lincoln Park Zoo—and created the allusion that the wedding party was having “a big ball of fun” celebrating the day, he says. “So, I thought, instead of throwing rice or flower petals, why not toss tennis balls?”
Kim and the couple connected with a friend at Wilson Tennis company and managed to get two vintage Jack Kramer rackets for the shoot and a bunch of tennis balls. According to Kim, the most challenging part of the shot was getting everyone to toss the ball at the same time, “but the wedding party had a blast doing it, and the photo became an instant hit with the couple. Wilson also loved the image and shared it on their social media!”
