Photography trends are always changing — but what makes an image withstand the test of time and become a timeless photo? This week, we are featuring five timeless photos from Meg Loek, Two Mann Studios, Albany Katz, Holly Bodkin, and Noelle Mirabella Photography. From classic locations to, yes, even actual film, find your weekly dose of inspiration from these timeless photos.

Meg Loek’s photography focuses on nostalgia, which tends to give her images a timeless feel. This photograph of her daughter with a floral umbrella was inspired by florist Keira Fleur. Loeks created her own floral umbrella for the photograph, using a monochromatic color palette for an even more classic feel. “I love to create images with my children that often center around a core memory,” Loeks said. “It could be anything from jumping off my front porch with an umbrella fully believing that I might be able to float like Mary Poppins to something as simple as playing in the rain with my parents as a child.” The photo was shot with the Canon EOS R5 and the Sigma 50mm f1.4 Art lens.

While wedding attire may go in and out of style, epic views, like in this shot from Two Mann Studios, help create the look of timeless photos. While the landscape was impressive by itself, the lighting was flat. Photographers Erika and Lanny Mann added light with a Profoto B10 to help the couple pop against the dramatic background. “Quite simply, the landscape inspired us to take this photo,” said Erika Jensen-Mann of Two Mann Studios. “People want to remember where they got married. With this photo we wanted to show the majesty of the landscape with the context of two very tiny humans. Both elements give the other context.

Nothing is more timeless than film photography. Wedding photographer Albany Katz used a Holga 120 film camera with black and white Kodak film to take this photograph of a bride and her veil. Besides the classic medium, the movement of the veil and the contrast between the light and the dark gives this photograph a timeless feel. Katz says she is always pulling inspiration from legendary fashion photographers. When she saw the bride’s veil, she was immediately inspired to take this image, which uses a pose with echoes of a Richard Avedon photograph.

Location can often be key to creating a photograph with modern gear that still has a very timeless feel. When Holly Bodkin of Hipnotik Photography drove by this diner, she thought it might be a good spot for a couples photoshoot — and she was right. The location pairs well with the candid emotion in the shot. “The couple I worked with for this session are really laid back and fun,” Bodkin said. “I told them to just hang out, order some food, drink some milkshakes and I would just capture them naturally enjoying a date night.” She took the photo using a Nikon D750 and Sigma 50mm Art lens.

The wrong props and clothing can date a photograph — but part of Cassandra Jone’s style at Noelle Mirabella Photography is using vintage furniture and classic knit clothing. The wooden cradle and knit clothing in this photo is part of her signature style, but it’s the sleeping puppy curled up next to the tot that really makes an impact.
