Hasselblad’s New H5X Medium-Format Camera

This has been a banner year for medium-format cameras and backs; there hasn’t been this much action in the MF space in a very long time (if ever). Hasselblad has been particularly active in 2014, launching four new models earlier this year: the 50MP CMOS Sensor H5D-50c camera, the H5D-50c MS, H5D-200c MS and the CFV-50c CMOS digital back.

This morning, just in time for Photokina, Hasselblad added yet another camera to its line: the H5X.

Targeting H1, H2, H2F, H4X users who want to update their cameras’ capabilities, Hasselblad envisions the dual-platform H5X as a back-up body for H5D users as well (the H5X accommodates both film and digital backs). The latter includes most older H-system and third-party digital backs (third-party digital backs offer the same functionality as the H4X).

With the H5X, users benefit from H5 features and functionality, such as Hasselblad’s True Focus. The H5X also offers new programmable button options but only when paired with an H5D sensor unit. Additionally, the H5X is compatible with HC and HCD lenses, HVD 90x viewfinder and the HV 90x-II viewfinder, which is optimized for the film and 40.2 x 53.7mm format. Add the HTS 1.5x tilt-shift adapter, and you have access to half of a dozen tilt-shift lenses.

Hasselblad acknowledged its V-system users by introducing the CFV-50c CMOS digital back, and it’s equally as refreshing to see the company releasing a camera that also brings new technology and features to users of older and discontinued models such as the H2.

Price: (approximately) $5,945 without viewfinder; $7,498 with viewfinder.
